Champion Tutor is honoured to have a very special group of people as part of its ‘Wellbeing Committee’, alongside co-founders Anna Coulson and Linda Burgess. The group meets periodically to share strategies to support the mental health and wellbeing vision that we have for children, young people, tutors, families and partners at the heart of the ‘Champion’ Community:

Pam Wheatley

Dr Pam Wheatley

Retired GP, NLP therapist and counsellor, with a psychiatric specialism, Pam has supported children, young people and adults with mental illness and mental wellbeing issues. Pam supports the co-founders with advice from a counselling perspective. Pam specialises in supporting anxiety, depression and eating disorders, and she is delighted to support the Champion community in an advisory capacity. Catherine Devereux

Catherine Devereux

A highly respected Employment solicitor who runs her own employment law and HR consultancy, advising a range of businesses across the Tees Valley. Catherine is also founder and Trustee of the Russ Devereux Headlight Project, a mental health charity which delivers emotional resilience programmes to children and provides therapeutic support to both children and adults.

Dr Fiona Smith

GP and Clinical lead at ‘Footsteps’, a British Medical Journal (BMJ) award-winning Teen Health Clinic which offers young people (11-19) a “one-stop shop” for mental, physical and sexual health needs, many of whom don’t meet the threshold for referrals to CAMHS.

Hollie Smith

Youth Lead at ‘Footsteps’ Youth Wellbeing, supporting the Youth Panel to create their own service from the initial idea until opening and leading Footsteps’ digital blog and website. Hollie is also Managing Director and Co-Founder of ‘Studenteer’ - an initiative offering students and recent graduates ‘Placements with Purpose’ in charities and social enterprises, transforming not only these causes-in-need, but the CVs of our next professional generation.

Anne Hayward

Anne Hayward

A national renowned SEND Specialist who works for schools, settings, colleges, charities, LAs and Government departments. She is a specialist in the implementation of the SEND Code of practice with a particular focus on Preparation for Adulthood. Her work has been nationally recognised on many occasions and her book Inclusion Making it Happen was the TES book of the week. She has also worked for the European Union in many countries as their senior consultant for inclusion. She is passionate about Mental Health and supports Charities such as Young Minds.

Monica Desai

A graduate from Oxford University, and tutor, whose personal experience has formed her beliefs that education, and any form of personal development can only be built on a strong foundation of health, both mental and physical. Monica is passionate about the student being placed at the front and centre of lessons, to nurture not only the brain, but also the mind.

Shazia Noor

Shazia Noor

Founder of Nur Fitness, inspiring women in nutrition, fitness and wellbeing, Shazia was 'Woman of the Year 2015' at the Tees BME awards, for her incredible fitness and charity work. An advocate of the holistic benefits of enjoying exercise, Shazia inspires people from all backgrounds and abilities, to find a way to keep the body and mind happy and healthy. She regularly blogs about the power of nature walks on wellbeing, and her ability to inject fun into healthy eating, fitness classes and personal training, has transformed lives.

As a graduate of Glasgow University and a tutor, I bring my own school experiences and realise that it is essential for a tutor to use his or her emotionally intelligence with an aim of understanding different mental health issues students may bring. I feel that as wellbeing representative, I have a lot to learn to be as effective as possible at supporting students, and am keen to expand my knowledge and understanding, by learning from and working alongside esteemed partners.
